WILLIAM J. CARPENTER, PhD

Architect · Educator · Author · Speaker

William J. Carpenter, PhD, is a nationally recognized architect, educator, author, and speaker whose work explores the relationship between design, construction, materiality, technology, and architectural education.

Across decades of teaching, practice, writing, and research, Carpenter has focused on the idea that architecture is best understood through making. His work examines how architects learn through direct engagement with materials, construction, fabrication, and the physical act of building—and how those experiences can strengthen both architectural education and professional practice.

He is the author and editor of numerous books examining design-build education, sustainable residential design, digital fabrication, and architectural practice, including Learning by Building, Design Build Studio, Modern Sustainable Residential Design, and Design Build Studio: Crafting Meaningful Work in Architecture Education. His scholarship has helped establish design-build as an important model for connecting architectural theory with construction, collaboration, and community engagement.

Carpenter is also the founder of Lightroom, an interdisciplinary design studio based in Atlanta. His practice brings together architecture, graphic design, photography, film, branding, and other creative disciplines through an experimental and materially focused approach to design.
